National Trails Day 2005

NATIONAL TRAILS DAY ® JUNE 4, 2005
"TAKE THE PATH TO A HEALTHIER YOU"

American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day® is the only nationwide trails celebration, bringing together thousands of outdoor enthusiasts to participate in educational exhibits, trail dedications, gear demonstrations, instructional workshops and trail work projects on the first Saturday of June. It also provides an opportunity to thank the volunteers, land managing agencies, and outdoor-minded businesses for their support in developing and maintaining trails.

National Trails Day (NTD) brings greater awareness to trails, along with their many benefits and pleasures. Whether the event involves one trail or a variety of activities, NTD is a wonderful opportunity to introduce people to trails. Many new trail users become dedicated to trails and their preservation once they get out and learn about them and they realize the many volunteer and paid hours required for creating the trails.

Thank you to everyone involved in another successful PNTA / AHS National Trails Day. Please check below for updates on each regions event.

Cascade West Region

Deception Pass State Park

"Mark off another successful National Trails Day for the Cascade West Region. The forecast was calling for rain, but we ended up having a beautiful day to work. We had 23 volunteers this year showed up to Deception Pass State Park to help out with trail work, seeing many regulars attend, and some new faces too. This year, the PNTA worked closely with Park Manager Jack Hartt, and focused on brushing out some trails in the South East section on the Park. We worked the Goose Rock Perimeter trail, the Discovery trail, and several other connector trails. We also sent out a small crew to install signs around the park, including signs for a trail built on NTD 2004. Many thanks to all our volunteers. You are truly dedicated people, and we appreciate all your hard work. Thank you!"

Pasayten Region

"The Pasayten Region hosted a hike/work party/BBQ luncheon to celebrate National Trails Day on June 4th. Nine hardy souls set out from Oroville and Omak - 3 via horseback - to the USFS proposed trailhead on the Summit Lake Road where the PNT descends from the pass between Haley and Wilcox Mountains southeast of Oroville. We lost one individual when he became separated from the convoy and his vehicle overheated. Leaving the trailhead we discovered that the Forest Grazing Permittee had beat us to the punch and had already brushed and logged out the trail which also serves as his primary stock driveway between two grazing pastures. However, we enjoyed a great hike with a splendid view of the Okanogan Highlands and observed many species of wild flowers and small wildlife. It was noted that there will likely be a "bumper crop" of wild strawberries in the Highlands this year as there were an abundance of blossoms along the entire length of the trail. Arriving at the other end of the trail on the Haley Canyon Road at lunchtime we were treated to a BBQ lunch fixed by former Pasayten Region Coordinator Jim Weed and his wife, Sheila. At that point we were joined by the three volunteers who had ridden in on horses along the Haley Canyon Road having brushed out the road for a mile and a half or so. Following lunch we had a great discussion of the PNT route through the Okanogan Highlands and the opportunities the trail presents for individual users and the various communities through which it passes. All in all it was a good celebration of National Trails Day and it was great to have walked, ridden and worked on a short piece of the PNT."

"The first picture of Andy Skurka is taken in Eureka in front of the Montana Store, the second one is at the Party at the Arena Grill.

Duane Melcher, Dave Hess, Jim Futrelle and myself dedicating the Bowman Lake Trail in Glacier National Park.  We received notification the day before NTD that we had received NRT Status through the Park.  We were supposed to be on Elk Mountain with the BCHA and TVHCH but decided to go to Polebridge and Bowman Lake instead.

On the way to Polebridge we ran into Devon Husby, his partner and his dog Chilly who were hiking the PNT.  We also met with John Fredrick who is kind of the voice for the Upper Flathead Valley and had a great conversation with him."
